How many cats can FieldHaven accommodate?

Currently, our capacity for cats and kittens at FieldHaven is 55. This includes approximately 25 cats at the shelter with the rest residing in foster homes. This capacity is based on our current resources of staff, volunteers and finances. Obviously, we get many more requests to take in cats than we can accommodate so we have... numerous programs to help those cats we can't bring into FieldHaven. They include SNAP (spay/neuter assistance program), CAT (community/cat assistance team), Courtesy Listings, temporary short-term fostering for people in transition and a number of other programs and services. FieldHaven is an adoption driven capacity shelter in that we have to adopt out a cat to make space to bring another one in. If you adopt from FieldHaven you actually save two lives - the cat you adopted and the one we bring into FieldHaven to fill that space!

How is FieldHaven Funded?

FieldHaven is a private non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. All of our operating funds for everything we do comes from donors like yourself, fundraisers and some grants. We receive NO funds from the city of Lincoln, the county of Placer or the state of California. Our budget is around $160k per year. Every donation of any amount is so appreciated and we applaud each and every one of you who support FieldHaven - we could not do all this great work with your help.

What is included in our Adoption Fee?

Our Adoption Fee includes a comprehensive medical package including:

  • Veterinary examination
  • Age-appropriate vaccines including FVRCP and Rabies
  • Feline Leukemia Blood test for kittens under 4 months
  • Feline Leukemia, Feline Immunodeficiency Virus and Heartworm blood test for kittens/cats over 4 months
  • Other blood tests as indicated
  • Parasite Prevention (worming, Frontline, etc.)
  • Microchip
  • Spay/Neuter Surgery
  • 4 lb. bag of Science Diet cat/kitten food
  • Adoption kit complete with all sorts of "goodies"
  • Post-adoption medical exam by one of our partner Veterinarians
  • Lifetime behavior counseling and advice via FieldHaven's CAT volunteers

All of this would cost $350 or more at full-service veterinarian.

Will FieldHaven adopt to cats to homes that will let them outdoors?

That's a question that doesn't have a simple "Yes/No" answer. The short answer is, Yes, we do adopt to indoor/outdoor homes.

BUT, there are several considerations that we seriously discuss with an adopter who is looking for an indoor/outdoor kitty. Not every cat is suitable for an indoor/outdoor home. Nor is every home good for an indoor/outdoor situations. For example, does the adopter live a busy street that would make it a dangerous situation for the kitty? Or, does the adopter live in a rural area where coyotes or other predators tend to be? If so, is the adopter willing to build a safe outdoor enclosure?

You can see there is a lot to consider when talking to adopters about and indoor/outdoor kitty. We want to make the absolute best match - and there are some kitties that just aren't happy living indoors all the time!
