Give a FieldHaven Volunteer a Pat on the Back

FieldHaven has over 100 volunteers who assist in every aspect of running the organization including kitty care, adoptions, veterinary care, accounting, grants administration, website design, behavior assistance, fostering, fundraising - you name it! While the focus of FieldHaven is the cats and kittens, the Board of Directors, staff and volunteers are what keeps everything going!

Each month, FieldHaven recognizes these valuable members by awarding a Volunteer of the Month. Innovative New Feral (Wild) Cat Programs

Did you know that only about 2% of the cats that enter an animal shelter are ever returned to their people? This is because cats are very reactive to unfamiliar situations. Many that enter shelters are so traumatized, that they are quickly evaluated to be feral or unsocialized, making them unadoptable, and as a result are euthanized.

In 1984, the founders of Best Friends Animal Society began the No More Homeless Pets movement. The first step for cats is to keep them from entering a shelter in the first place. This is especially true for ferals. One innovative new program called Feral Freedom in Jacksonville, FL is doing just that. Best Friends has partnered with the City of Jacksonville and a local spay/neuter organization called First Coast No More Homeless Pets to reduce the cat overpopulation. Since this is a "community effort", they refer to their ferals as "community cats".

This is how it works. When animal control gets a call about "community cats", they humanely trap them and immediately send them to First Coast No More Homeless Pets. This organization then spay/neuters them and returns them to their natural habitat. These cats never see the inside of an animal shelter.

New York City has a similar program. They keep track of their feral cat populations in the New York City Feral Cat Database. This database helps them track the feral cat populations and assist animal shelters in successfully returning feral cats to their colonies instead of euthanizing them.

The hope is that more communities will adopt similar programs, fewer cats will wind up in animal shelters, those that do will be successfully returned to their homes, and one day fulfilling the dream of No More Homeless Pets.
