FieldHaven Presents
FieldHaven is proud to partner with thousands of pet adoption organizations and the Helen Woodward Animal Center in the Iams 2009 "Home for the Holidays" campaign to place as many adoptables as possible in their forever homes this Holiday season.
From December 10-24, we will have cats and kittens available for viewing at both our satellite adoption centers during normal store hours. During this time, our adoption counselors and assistants will be working extended hours (see below) at PetSmart, and on-call counselors will be available mornings at PetSmart and weekdays at Petco.
Give a kitty the best Christmas present they could ask for, a loving forever home! Check our website often for a preview of available adoptables. New kittens are being cleared for adoption each week.

FieldHaven's Foster Care
aka "Kitten Central"
A Very Good Year!
On November 8, 2008, Penny Dougherty came on board as FieldHaven's staff Foster Coordinator. Penny's role assumes responsibility for all the kittens and teenagers (under 1 year old) coming and going through FieldHaven. Kittens under a year old are more susceptible to disease and haven't developed their full immunity yet. Therefore, to protect both the kittens and the resident adults at the shelter, FieldHaven's protocol is to house all kittens under a year old in foster care.
While most fostering operations occur at FieldHaven's shelter, Penny opened her heart and home (what she affectionately calls "Kitten Central") to be a satellite for triaging foster homes. The Foster Coordinator role encompasses vaccinations, worming, defleaing, medicating, incubating, bottle feeding, transporting, emergency care, intensive care, intaking, and recruiting foster homes.
Penny is always available to support foster parents, answer emergency calls, rock and feed the bottle babies, nurse the sick kittens, and lovingly accompany the terminally ill over the rainbow bridge. Thanks to all the dedicated FieldHaven volunteers and staff, "Kitten Central" is proud to report the following successes for 2009:

Chain Gang Update
Going into their second month of no smoking, the Chain Gang chain is still unbroken. They report that although the cravings are getting less, dealing with stressors without their smokes, is still quite a challenge. Don't forget to make your monthly pledge of support. Sponsoring is easy, just $10 a month.

Did You Know?
Did you know that Christmas trees are considered to be mildly toxic to pets? The fir tree oils can irritate the mouth and stomach, causing excessive drooling or vomiting. The tree needles are not easily digested and can cause GI irritation, vomiting, gastrointestinal obstruction or puncture.
Other holiday plants, specifically Mistletoe and Holly, are considered to be moderately to severely toxic.
And did you know that according to Snopes, the belief that the Poinsettia plant is extremely toxic is not entirely true. In fact, it's almost an urban legend dating back to 1919. The sap of Poinsettias is considered to be mildly toxic/irritating, and will probably cause nausea or vomiting, but not death. However, It is better to error on the side of caution, and keep pets away from this plant.
The severity depends on how much is consumed. Keep your pets safe this holiday season by monitoring them closely and keeping them away from toxic plants. Contact your veterinarian immediately if you suspect your pet has consumed anything toxic.
