New Shelter Update

Thanks to all the supporters of FieldHaven, we are hoping to break ground on the new shelter facility early this spring. We haven't quite collected all the funds required, but we now have enough to get started.

As exciting as this is, it will limit our ability to take in new rescues in the coming months. We are desperately working to place our existing adoptables living in the trailer that's going to be torn down. We will continue to try to accommodate as many cats as we can in foster homes and in a very limited capacity at FieldHaven, but will have to limit those to the most urgent cases.

But don't despair, during construction, our outreach programs will not be affected and the FieldHaven CAT (Cat/Community Assistance Team) will be available to assist in any way possible. Whether it's giving you helpful advice with a problem or information on our many outreach programs:

This is a very exciting time of change for FieldHaven and we are looking forward to sharing a wonderful new facility with you to continue our "No more homeless pets" campaign.

Together we can make this dream a reality! Be a part of FieldHaven's Future by pledging your continued support. Please Donate On-line today!

Myths About FIV
(Feline Immunodeficiency Virus)

Myth 1: It's highly contagious: It's Not! FIV cannot live more than a few seconds in open air and is species specific (it cannot be spread from one species to another). The most common way it's transmitted is through severe bite wounds or a mother cat giving birth to kittens. Sterilization is the best defense. Neutering males reduces fighting that could cause wounds and spaying females eliminates them from passing on to new generations.

Myth 2: Cats can't lead a healthy, happy life with FIV: Many live into their senior years. In fact, one Best Friends Animal Sanctuary resident, Cash, was recently adopted into his forever home at age 19. Although FIV cats are more susceptible to secondary infections, most of the time they can deal with them quite nicely. Keeping them inside only and limiting their exposure to possible carriers of disease can greatly reduce these risks.

As a result of these myths, many FIV kitties are euthanized each year or are slow to be adopted. Many never get adopted. So the next time you're looking for a new companion, join the heroes across the nation working to keep these FIV cats safe and healthy and get them into forever homes.
